ヨークでの暮らしには大満足なんじゃが、英国南部よりは気温が低いので、五月に入ってさえ、霜が降りることがあるんじゃよ。
霜は見た目には美しいものじゃが、植物の新芽などは往々にしてやられてしまうのが残念じゃ。

Living in York is wonderful, but the weather is always a little colder than it is in the South of England. In May we have had some very cold wet days and even a heavy frost. Any frost looks beautiful, but of course it can kill off many of our new plants.

さて五月には、以下のようなことをするから忙しいわい。

・これらの新芽を寒さから守ることを忘れないようにすること。

・雑草はこの頃からとんでもなく成長を始めるから、定期的に鍬入れ(雑草とり）が必要。

・毎週の芝刈り。　芝刈機の刃は、少しずつ高めにしてゆくんじゃ。

・月末には夏に向けて花苗を植える。

・増えすぎたスイセンや春咲の球根を堀上て分けたり秋まで保管したり。

・生垣などを刈り込むんじゃが、大抵、小鳥が巣を作っていたりするからそれは気を付けないといかん。

・ジャガイモの土寄せ。

• I must always remember to protect my tender young plants.
• The weeds start to go crazy so regular hoeing is essential.
• Mow lawns weekly gradually raising the lawn mower blade setting.
• I'll be planting my summer bedding plants at the end of the month.
• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs.
• I have to check for nesting birds before trimming the hedges. I usually have two or three families nesting every year.
• This is the time to pull the soil up around the potatoes.
